Information about our Church here in Halifax

About the Church

We are a growing work here in Halifax, aiming to spread the good news of the gospel in our Town and the surrounding area. We use the NIV version of the Bible in our services and sing a variety of modern and traditional hymns. The church has a membership of 35 people of varying ages and the typical attendance at a Sunday morning service is roughly 50 and a Sunday evening service would see about 25. Services are recorded onto CD for those who are unable to attend. We have a crèche room and a Sunday school available during the service as well as many activities throughout the week.

About Halifax
Halifax, with a population of over 200,000 people, grew in the early part of the 1800's as a centre for the trade of wool, with a number of large mills, including the still prominent Dean Clough mill, now an art gallery.

Located in the heart of Calderdale, West Yorkshire, (Northern England) the woollen trade bloomed due to the close proximity of the hills and moor land where many sheep were farmed. Local textile and engineering industries remained vital to the local economy until the 1960's. Halifax was particularly famous for its Worsteds, cotton, silk and carpets.

In 1927 the Halifax Building Society was born, after the amalgamation of two former societies. It became the largest building society in the world. The growing popularity of railway excursions and the newly expanding leisure industry encouraged tourists to visit Halifax 'in its delightful situation on steep hills overlooking the narrow Hebble valley'.

Today Halifax is a multi-cultural community, with a much reduced industrial economy but a growing tourist industry. Attractions include Dean Clough, Shibden Hall, The Piece Hall, Wainhouse Tower and the close proximity of the hills. The town centre boasts a number of delightful examples of Victorian and Georgian architecture, and the Borough Market.
